I've been seeing non-stop Prop 50 ads and like...yeah, we all agree that election tampering is bad. But that's really what you wanna go all in on right now? What is a "free and fair election" when ICE agents can manhandle a sitting US Senator and face no consequences?

"New Yorkers bite more people than sharks annually" is an excellent example of how statistics can be misleading. Like yeah no shit, do you have any idea how rare it is to even encounter a shark in the wild? They're not exactly urban animals. I'm pretty damn sure that if sharks were living in big cities like pigeons, just strolling down the streets looking for food scraps, you'd see a lot more news stories about New Yorkers biting them.
One of the most fucked up things about the anglophone internet is the way people who speak "broken" english are seen as inherently less trustworthy.
It's a weird position to be in because like. I wouldn't say I'm "privileged" for being proficient in English because I don't think it's a privilege to have to learn the cultural hegemon's language to be able to interact with most relevant stuff on the internet. But I do think the fact that I was able to develop a good grasp of the language without much effort in my teenage years *is* a marker of certain ways in which I was privileged in my upbringing over other people in the global south.
And like. Having had to e-beg on this website several times over the years when stuff got tough for me economically, with people's reactions being almost universally sympathetic and helpful, it feels kinda weird knowing that I wouldn't be able to do that if my english was like 20% worse because, when someone on the internet is asking for money, "broken" English is almost universally treated as an indicator of them being a scammer.
